John Walkers did a very short (15 minutes or so) testing of the system today. He mostly tested the new enrolment form. Here's what happened:
0. Didn't notice the stars (*) suggesting a mandatory field at all.
1. Didn't read the long blurbs after the field names. This, however, is expected.
2. Didn't realize he had to "agree to the rules." The "agree to rules" check box is selected by default. But, it appeared as unselected in Safari. So when he clicked "submit", he got an error msg regarding "rules". So he started searching for this "rule" and when he found it, he clicked the "rule" link which took him to a different page and all data he entered were lost.
3. Couldn't see the difference between the "Borough/Town" field and "City/County" field. He entered "London" for both of these fields.
4. He filled in all fields in the form. So when he didn't know what to write in a certain field (e.g. referee), he was puzzled. [Right now, the "referee" field is mandatory. But I have a hunch that Mary wanted it to be optional at first. Can't remember right now :-(]
5. Successfully "accepted" the new application from the "admin panel".
referee
Ideally, the referee field would be a dropdown with a list of referees. It would return the member id of the person. In a more complex system, there might be a database table of referees, storing the members ids of the people under them. In which case the dropdown might return a referee id.
Definition of "Referee"
I'm not sure if there is a definitive list of referees. It could be an
unknown referee, like when you apply for a job. So the important thing
is to elicit the information about how to contact this referee. Are we
getting mixed up here with local neighbourhood representatives? We have
to get this procedure running smoothly, or it will be difficult to
initiative people into the system. It needs to be robust, without being
off-putting.
